The growth process is divided into four phases: silkworm egg, larva, the adult one and pupa.
- 1. Silkworm baby has just hatched from eggs
We usually call it the silkworm-ant because it looks just like ants, the body is covered with fine-wool. About two days later, the hair is not obvious.
- 2. Silkworm baby grows up
Silkworm baby becomes second age worm after the first peeling. She increases its age after each peeling. In its life time, it will have total 4 peelings. Then it will finally start silking cocooning after eating one week’s mulberry.
- 3. Silkworm baby begins silking after the first peeling.

- 4. Silkworm baby begins silking cocoons
Five-aged adult silkworm takes two days to form a cocoon and in the cocoon for the last time it has last peeling and become pupae.
- 5. Silkworm baby flies out from cocoons
About 10 days later, the silkworm baby becomes moth, and flies out from the cocoon. The tail of a female moth gives off a certain air to attract male for mating, the male will then die after copulation. Female moths may spend a night to lay about 500 eggs, and then they will slowly die.
